CHAPTER FOUR
The Blackbird landed on what was left of Alcatraz Island, the sun had just begun to rise on the horizon but flames and smoke still billowed from burt out cars the the shells of military out houses and bunkers. The last time the X-men had stood on this ground it was against Magneto and his close on four years ago, now as the X-men everyone of them, Hank, Storm, Logan, Kitty and Bobby, Piotr, Lorna and Emma and Warren stepped out caustiously onto the ground beneath the Blackbird. Storm walked to the front of the group and looked at them, they had been folllowing the events of the last few months, like everyone else in the wolrd had, on televison, the news reoprts every hour with the latest developments, of the ongoing war between The Brotherhood and The Avengers. All over the cure. Magneto had surrounded himself with mutants who had taken the cure and had become outraged when it stopped working and mutants who simply wanted to fight the establishment. Looking at their grim faces Storm thought back on the last forty-eight hours where life in the mansion had come to a complete stand-still, the continous new converage of what the had named "The War of the Atom" had held everyone's attention as news reporters repeated "more civilians have been killed in the mutant cross-fire", "The mutant known as Magneto is not holding back", "His elected generals are leading strategic and focused attacks on military strongholds based on Alcatraz Island where the cure was developed and furhter afiled at Alkali Lake" the most shocking report, the hardest one for the X-men to digest was "The mutant known only as 'The Rogue', Magneto's leading general has lead a strike team to Alkali Lake where the governement and The Avengers are based and have been working from in order to stop. One survior reported that 'The Rogue' did most of the damage attacking and killing 8 governement officials before destroying the entire base, her accomplises have not yet been identified but we can assure that they are amongst the Brohterhoods 'inner circle'".
No-one wanted to believe that Rogue had joined Magneto, but it was harder for them to believe that she would kill. Logan had found it particularly hard to digest, he didn't want to believe that his Marie was one of Magneto's elected generals after what he had done to her. When he had sat down to watch the news video footage he couldn't believe that he was seeing his Marie maul and attack anyone she believed was against her. Now they stood on the ground which Rogue had helped desimate and Storm stood in front of them, worn out, emotionally from watching the distress and destruction thios war had brought and that her beloved student and friend had wrought.
"Ok team. You have your orders, find Rogue and bring her back to the Blackbird"
The final blow-out between The Brotherhood and The Avengers had been caustiously televised, and the X-men watched as Rogue had, quite happily taken her gloves off and thrown herself at her opponents, as she used the powers of others against The Avengers, but they had also seen her battle with the government agent Carol Danvers had ended in a glorious, nuclear like explosion that had spilt the golden-gate bridge in two "with casualties on both sides".
"The Professor hasn't been able to locate her exact position, but he believes that she is in the vicinity of the Golden Gate bridge. Warren you're our eyes in the sky, if you see her get her, radio us and let her know about any ohter surviors, Hank, Wolverine and myself are going to asses the Golden Gate bridge directly and its banks, the rest of you are to conduct a full scale search of Alcatraz"
Hank, Storm and Logan got back into the Blackbird without another word. The other X-men followed their orders. Everyone felt the same way, they were hoping to find her, but find her dead, because they couldn't comprehend what life would be like if she were alive.
Logan sat in his seat with a grunt and looked at Storm.
"Logan?"
He made no reply
"You have to understand she had her reasons, she wouldn't have done this without some conviction"
He still made no reply
"You should take some comfort in the knowledge that she wasn't herself, The Professor..."
"She killed eight people and you saw as well as I did what she did to that Danvers woman! The Professor hasn't been able to track her for months. We're not bringing Rogue back with us, she's dead, the sooner you all realise that the better we all be"
Logan had watched with quite fear as the explosion wiped out all the news cameras. He'd lost Jean and now Marie was gone too, he was heart-broken, he thought his life had ended when Jean's has but he was wrong, it had ended the day he found out Marie had gone Rogue, and joined Magneto, the man responsible for her near-death at Liberty Island. That was the last thing that was said in the Blackbird before they all arrived at their drop-offs. As Storm searched through the rubble of the Golden Gate bridge, Logan and Hank patrolled their respective banks. Logan wasn't looking for Rogue, he didn't want to bring her back, alive and he didn't want her to find her dead either, he wouldn't survive seeing her like that, he knew he wouldn't survive seeing her at all given the events of the last year, he'd rather live the rest of his life believing that she was still out there somewhere, travelling the world the way she had always wanted too.
The sun had started to rise over San francisco, the smoke still billowed up into the sky as the fires began to breathe their last of the morning air. It had been hours since they had landed and there had been complete com-silence, Warren who had now joined Storm on the bridge hadn't found anything, the X-men were losing hope. Logan had given up and was sitting with his head in his hands when the radio crackled into life, it was Hank.
"Redevous. I believe I've found her, birng the Blackbird"
Strom had collected the others before landing near Hanks location. Logan and Storm were the only two to emerge from the jet, Storm walked slowly before sprinting to hanks side once he came into view. She collapsed to her knees beside Hank who sat a little way away from the bundle that lay at the shore, the tide gently lapping against the lifeless form clad in black. Logan walked up beside them and looke over at the lump laying there. None of them made a move towards it, there was a hesitiation, they wanted it to be Rogue but they didn't because if it was then they would have to admit that she did all those things they saw on the news. Eventually Hank walked over and pulling and the shoulder of the figure rolled it onto its back. Logan noticed the white-grey streaks it was her and he stepped closer, he was torn between walking away in anger and lifting her up into his arms and weeping. As Storm moved forwad and kneeling at her side she brushed her wet her from her cold-damp face, Hank felt for a pulse but hung his head when he couldn't find one, Storm stood up and placed he hands over her face in horror and upset. Logan knelt beside her, looking her over he didn't know how to react but simply looked at Hank and spoke sternly
"Lift her and bring her to the Jet" he stormed of as Hank and Storm shared a solemn moment over the seemingly lifeless body of theri former temaate and friend. Logan made his way onto the jet he looked around the other X-men, who looked to him for words of comfort and reassurance but he offered none, they didn't deserve ot be comforted, he knew after seeing her that they were all aprtially responsible for where she was now. he took the captains seat as Storm came in behind him, tears streamed her cheeks, the other X-men, Rogue's fellow students knew that when hank came back he'd have Rogue with him.
***
It was midday when they arrived back at the Mansion. Logan stormed from the Jet and passed out into the hall of the lower levels, the Professor emerged from Cerebro but Logan said nothing to him, he changed, got his bike and left the Mansion. Days passed before anyone saw him again. Hank brought Rogue into the med-lab with the Professor and Storm in tow, the doors to the med-lab closed behind them and the other X-men made their way back to the school, to inform the other students of what had happened.
The Professor looked into the plae, veined face of the woman called Rogue, he didn't recognise her, not even with the whie streaks, anger and betrayal, life lived in fear and at war had changed her.
"There's no pulse Charles"
Xavier looked at the saddened faces of Storm and Hank
"That doesn't mean she is dead" Xavier spoke with hope on his breath "Leave us, go back to your students, they need you now"
Hank and Storm departed slowly and reluctantly. Xavier shed a tear for Rogue before placing his hands either side of her head. Stepping into her mind he saw the battle field that it was, the screaming and shouting the fires and smoky apparitions that filled the space inside her head. He saw the entities of his X-men, Logan, Bobby, Piotr, himself, he saw Magneto, Jon and Carol Danvers as well as some other human and mutant entites he did not recognise. Amongst them he found Rogue, the Rogue that had come to the institute at seventeen years old as he reached for her he was shoved focefully from the inside of her head. Opening his eyes and looking at the body lying on the table he saw as her chest lifted slowly and colour returning to her cheeks, he tried once again to get inside her head, to talk to the Rogue that lived in there, held prisoner by the personalities of all those she had absorbed but he couldn't, as he came to her side he lifted her hand in his but nothing happened, it was as cold as stone, so he left in search of Hank.
As he came into his office Storm and Hank sat there solemnly surrounded by the X-men that had been with them and those that had counted themselves as Rogue's friends. "Where's Logan?" when Xavier didn't get an answer he went to his desk and spoke authoratively from behind it "She's not dead" he looked up to the besotted, tear-streaked faces of his X-men, their eyes wide with shock and disbelief
"Professor?" Hank spoke
"She's in acoma" That was the last word spoken in that room.
***
Logan returned at the end of the week having escaped to Laughlin to drink and fight his pain away. As he came into the Institute he heard how life had returned to normal, he walked out into the main hall, the sutdents were moving between classes, chatting as if nothing had happened. It had been a week since they had found Rogue dead and noone seemed to have been affected by it. He made his way towards Xaviers office enraged, storming through the door he interpreted Xavier in converstaion with Hank
"We'll have to move her somewhere Charles, I simply don't have the equipment to monitor her here or the staff to look after her"
Xavier caught Logans eye
"It's good to have you home old friend, we have been rather short-handed without you"
"What the hell is going on!" he exclaimed
Hank and Xavier exchanged a glance and Hank stepped forward
"Rogue's not dead Logan"
"She's in acoma" Xavier spoke softly
Logan simply looked at them before leaving the room. Hank followed him "Logan, she's non-responsive"
"But she's alive"
"Barely"
Logan stopped short and looked at Hank "What do you mean barely? Is she alive or not fur-ball!"
"She's is alive, but her vitals are weak, she's non-responsive. Whatever she went through was to much for her systm to cope with, it looks like she suffered serious head trauma when she landed and Charles can't get inside her head either"
Logan took time to look at him "As long as there is breath in body I'll want to see her Hank" Logan moved away
"I thought you stopped caring about her a long time ago Wolverine" as he moved back towards the Professors office
***
Logan hovered over the pale Marie like figure that lay on the table. He ran his fingers down her arm, all the tubes and wires coming out of her angered him. He noticed the cuts and brusies, the blatant gaping wounds along her sides and chest. her noticed three glaring holes in her right shoulder, familar markings, he walked over and ran his finger over each one before taking her hand in his and placing his other hand tenderly on her cheek. Tears ran down his cheeks as he felt he smooth, ice-cold skin against his rough, warm hands, he whispered
"I'm sorry" into her ear, before lifting her gently into his arms and holding her "I promised to take of you and I failed".
The next morning after discussing it at great length Hank and Xavier had decided to take Rogue and place her in the care of Moira McTaggart. Logan argued that she should stay with them in the Mansion but he knew it was futile, just like before there was nothing more they could do for her here> Logan watched morunfully as they loaded her into the Balckbird and took off. It would be months before he'd see her again in the halls of the Mansion.

believe it or not I am terrified of pidgeons. no joke
Hank awoke early the following morning. He knew Storm would be back with the Professor, he'd sat up most of the night analyzing the DNA sample he took from Rogue, she had told him about all those people inside her head but hi didn't realize that the actually existed inside her.
"Morning McCoy"
Logan's gruff voice echoed form the door of the kitchen taking Hank by surprise
"You're up early"
"Can't sleep" Logan yawned as he opened the fridge and reached for the juice
"Got a lot on your mind?"
Logan turned round carton in hand "You could say that" he gulped down the juice and slammed the half-empty carton down on the counter
"Are you sure you're okay?"
"God I mean I can't even drink...Hank? Do you ever get something stuck in your head and suddenly everything you do it makes you think of it?"
Hank looked down into his coffee cup stirring idly "Depends" he pushed out the chair opposite him, as a way of inviting him to sit and talk Logan strode over, sitting down he set the carton on the table in front of him and looked at Hank
"It's just" he paused "God I don't know if I can even talk to you about this" he clenched his fist "It's just, normally I got a problem I go to Rogue, the kid gets me, probably 'cus she got so much of me in her head" burrowing his forefinger into his temple, illustrating his point
"So why don't you go talk to her then?" Hank snapped
"I would if I could McCoy" he looked down at his feet "Ya see, the kid" he looked up at Hank "She's the problem"
"What's she done?"
"Gone and grown up on me is what shes done" Logan got up of the chair walking back to the center unit he lent on it crossing his arms he continued to look at his feet "I mean she ain't a kid no more McCoy" he looked up at Hank "I can't stop thinking about her McCoy"
"Logan!"
"I know Hank, she's a student, I'm a teacher, she's nearly twenty -one, she'll be up for team-leader soon, regardless god only knows how old I am"
"Then you know following this fixation you've developed into reality would be..."
"Wrong, inappropriate, yeah I get it" he leant back in his chair
"If she were older Logan then maybe but as it is..."
"As it is she's Marie and I'm Logan and she has Bobby, I get it. God" he ran his hand through his hair ans muttered under his breath "why did i kiss her?" but Hank heard him
"You what Logan?"
He sighed "I kissed her, in the rec. room it was just a kiss, trust me"
"How did that happen"
"If i knew I'd tell you fur-ball"
"Logan I can see this turning terrribly wrong for the both of you. And we've seen how wrong your infatuatios can turn out"
Logan threw Hank a venomous look his eyebrow raised a teeth bared
"The kid ain't anything like Jean.!" he exclaimed slamming his fist into the table
"I understand that but unless you talk to her about it what your feeling now your entire relationship will become no more than unrequited love. You could lose her entirely, besides Logan these feelings could be no more than "leftover" affections from Jean and you're attaching them to the only other person you feel a special bond with, which just so happens to be a very ravishing and intriguing young women" Hank got up from his seat and made for the door "made ever more intriguing by her inability to touch"
Hank left the room as Logan breathed in deep and slouched down in his chair, he wondered if his affections for Rogue were what Hank said they were no more than the feelings he'd had for Jean and maybe his "growing obsession" was no more than a coping device, did he really want to be with the kid, like he had wanted to be with Jean?
"Rogue" Logan knocked at the door "Rogue?" he pushed the door open slowly and saw her bed was empty he stepped into the room caustiously "Marie?"
Rogue froze in the shower "Logan's in my room...and I'm in the shower...shit"
"Marie are you in here?"
"Be right out" she shouted "Marie D'acanto what the hell are you doing!" she stepped from the shower and grabbed a towel wrapping it around herself she stepped into her room. Logan had his back to the bathroom staring out her window "Logan?"
Her sweet southern voice caught in his ears and he turned slowly to her perfectly creamy white body in all its sumptous, curvacious glory, each curve just right , wrapped in nothing but a towel Logans eyes widened and his jaw dropped as she walked towards him smiling he watched her hips roll with every step
"You know" she lifted her hand and closed his mouth shut "stand like that long enough you'll get lock-jaw" she smiled as she brushed past him and stood at the window. He looked her up and down, from her long slender legs up to her where the towel folded on her hip and to where her delicate hands rested on her chest
"Beautiful view don't you think" Rogue smiled she could see Logan's expression in the window pane and how he was studying every part of her in immense detail "Don't you think Logan?" she cocked her head over her shoulder
"What? Yeah beautiful"
"Did you want something or did you just come up here to check out the view" she laughed walking over to her wardrobe. She pulled out a pair of sweats and a tank top, rummaging through her under wear drawer she figured "hell if Logan's going to be looking at me give him something to look" she walked into the bathroom leaving the door ajar
"So what was it you wanted then Logan?"
"I was just, I mean" he stammered and stuttered before pausing, Rogue heard him walking towards the door and heard the thud as he landed against the door frame "Marie we need to talk"
she stopped in the midst of pulling on her clothes, and stood in front of him. He had an expression on his face that worried her, she had never seen hims like this, not since Jean died anyway, she ran her hands through his hair
"Whats up sugar?" her southern twang caught in his ear and he looked at her, he didn't see Rogue "the kid" he saw Marie, a blossoming young woman with so much potential and he couldn't help it, he wrapped his arm around hier waist, placing his other hand on the back of her neck her pulled her in and kissed her, just as passionately as he had wanted to the night before. Her eyes were wide with shock as she stared at him before giving in and surrending to his passionate embrace, kissing him back she ran her hands up arond his neck, Logan lifted her hip up against his and turning to lean her against the wall he felt her delicate smooth hands run up his chest under his shirt. He let her slip from his hip and stepped away from her, breathing heavily he looked at her, Rogue stood there bewildered and dishevelled looking at him
"What?"
"I need to talk to you Rogue?"
"Rogue?" she straightened herself up "Whats wrong Logan?"
"About last night ?"
"What about it" she said moving forward towarsds him, reaching her hand out to walk his fingers up his chest Logan grabbed her wrist and pushed it back to her side
"It shouldn't have happened, none of this should have happened, its not right!"" he looked at her, his stern, teacher look he used on students when they were in trouble, the fact that he was looking at her with that expression made her feel so completely distant from him at that moment it scared her
"It was a mistake Roguee and I'm sorry"
"Logan?"
"No look kid, you're still a student here,"
"Logan look I..."
"Rogue its not like that, I don't feel that way about you, I never will, I'm sorry if I made you think otherwise" he snapped walking towards the door "I don't...I don't think of you as anything more than a friend" he opened the door as she stepped forward to grab him "I love Jean" he looked her square in the face and she stepped down, everything she had ever wanted had been thrown back in her face, and the man she had loved fsince she met him in Laughlin at the tender age of seventeen, the man who had been the only constant and suppport in her life walked out of her room and out of her heart forever.
She sped towards her room, Bobby had fallen behind before they had even reached the stairs and now she was just outrunning herself, the voices echoed of the walls, the owners appeared like smoke in front of her, the tears rolled in endless rivers down her cheeks, the pain was unimaginable and as it worsened the blaze crawled over her skin once more, she felt this weight crushing her, running became a struggle, her skin grew hotter, her breathing labored, she couldn't breath, collapsing to her knees she yelled out in anguish, as the blaze materialized into a fiery aura she heard things smash, crack and break, pulling her self to her feet she noticed how she looked like a human torch before realizing the class, the plaster and shards of wood scattered across the hall floor, the walls the ceiling, the windows had all felt the weight she shoved from herself.
"Where's Rogue!"
"What?"
"Logan where's Rogue?"
"I...I don't know"
Storm made to leave before Logan grabbed her by the arm
"What's wrong!?"
she looked him over "Follow me" she sped off towards the student rooms "Rogue, she had an appointment with the Professor"
"Yeah and?"
"I found Bobby Drake, said Rogue sped off from his office, so I go and check on the Professor, he's unconcious"
"What! Logan stopped short "What do you mean unconcious"
"Your guess is as good as mine Logan," Storm stopped looking him square on "somethings happened or is happening to Rogue, that none of us can fathom, and now it seems shes turned on the Professor" they look at each other as another shattering earthquake rocked the building from within.
"let her go Logan" Logan stopped short
"Professor?"
"There's nothing more we can do for her here, she needs her space, she has to work it out on her own old friend"
And just like that Rogue, his Marie was gone, he may never see her again and in a funny way he was glad, the kid, the Marie he knew and loved died when she took that cure, Rogue was gone from his life and from the X-men. For good.
- Mood:
amused - Music:Lil' Chris [shhhh]
A mere forty-eight hours had elapsed since they found Rogue in her tub and there was still no change in her she was still unconscious in the med-lab. Those in charge of the Institue and its students had barely slept a wink in the last two days,
"We need to bring the Professor back now Hank"
"He's not ready to come back Ororo, Dr McTaggart..."
"To hell with Moira, Emma's out there with him she's reported that he's more than willing to home and is highly concerned about Rogue"
Logan did not get involved with the arguements between Hank and Ororo instead he wandered down to the med-lab every-now and then to check on Rogue - his Marie. Bobby had decided to deal with what was going on by getting back to reality by spending time with the ohter Xmen and some of the newer mature students. Logan for the first time ion years was feeling pitifully sorry for himself, wanting nothing more than to lock himself away or pack up everything and leave it all behind in the light of what had happened to Jean and now with Marie, the only solace he took was that Marie was still alive, he still had a chance to save her
"Its two years since Jean die Logan, move on, she never loved you anyway, she loved Scott and you need to realise that you pathetic excuse for a man" he'd tell himself, and little by little it began to sink in
"I'll fly out tonight" She spoke authoratively
"Ororo I still don't think this is a good idea"
"To hell with you Hank" Logan snapped as they stepped into the lift "We're doing this for Rogue. God the kid tried to kill herself, thats evident ,no argument 'bout it"
Hank knew that Logan was right, and where Rogue was concerned Hank knew there was no point in arguing.
"Besides Hank" Storm spoke breaking the silence "The Drake boy said that Rogue was hearing voices"
"That's something the Professor needs to look at fuzz-ball, don't you think?" Logan arched an eye-brow and glared at him. The lift came to a halt and the three stepped out Hank made straight for the med-lad whilst Logan followed Storm to the Jet.
"You really think the Professor can help her Storm?" Logan stopped short and watched as Storm did the same before turning to look at him
"I think that there's more to whats happening than we know"
"But why the Professor, can't we just get her to talk to us" he paused "I can get her to talk, she trusts me" he announced proudly, smiling his cocky smile
"I don't deny that she does Logan but" she stepped closer to him and looked into his deep feral eyes "In all honesty what Bobby said about Rogue hearing voices concerns me and I don't half worry that it may be related to the cure"
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying that maybe the cure has unforseen side-effects, maybe its not working, maybe its back-fired and with the nature of rogue's ability it could be dangerous for all of us, I mean look at her now" she sighed and moved off, "keep an eye on the Institue and the students while I'm gone"
"What about Rogue" he shouted
"That was a given Logan" she stepped up onto the Jet and Logan watched as it ascended through the roof, a basketball dropping down into the room as the Blackbird vanished he sighed, walked over and picked it up, bouncing it once or twice he thought about what was going to happen when the Professor got back, was it even going to look like Charles and what was he going to say about Marie
"Voices? What the hell? "
He left the room, basketball tucked under his arm he made his way back up into the school
"No you're right Ororo it doesn't sound like her in the least. If I had been there I would have told her not to bother with the cure, I doubted its ability to work from the get go"
"It wouldn't have worked Charles. Rogue was bent on getting it"
"I can only imagine" Charles turned to Emma Frost who was sitting attentively at his bed side, she was a psychic with power rival to Jean's but she possessed more control over her ability and Charles had taken and instant liking to the girl he now deemed his protogé
"Emma go find Moira" Emma left without saying a word and the two watched her go
"Charles?"
"Yes,about Rogue, I know, but there isn't much I can do or say from here. What's her current condition?"
"She's been unconscious since it happened. Hank says shes in a coma, but he can't explain why."
"Do you know how long she was under..."
"No, Bobby Drake found her like that, for all we know she could have been like that for hours"
Xavier sat back in his bed, closed his eyes and thought about what lay ahead for him, his x-men and his precious Rogue.
"Stop What?"
"Talking"
"But we aren't..."
"STOP!" she let go of the sides of her head and pulled herself into a fully upright position, crossing her legs and pulling the wires and needles out of her arms and of her chest she spoke to herself
"Someone needs to explain this to me, one minute I'm running a bath, and now I'm here?"
"What do you want explained kid?"
"How the hell did I get here?"
"Well you kept complaining about us, how you wanted it to stop, for it all to end"
"So what?"
"C'mon kid, you can't put two and two together"
"Logan's right Rouge. Think about it?"
Rogue paused as the voices and twisted personalities in her head giggled "OH GOD! I didn't!!!"
"No you didn't, we did it for you?"
"Why?That's not what I meant"
"And"
"Crap. Now everyone's going to think I'm a suicidal, depressed wreck"
"Well you are"
"Shut-up Jon"
"Pyro's right. You had so much potential and you wasted it all with Xavier and his X-men"
"Shut it Eric, you tried to kill me before, this was probably you're idea, physco!"
The voices fell silent as Rogue swung her legs of the table. The doors to the lab opened and Rogue struggled to raise her head
"Rouge?"
She lifted her head at an angle and stared blearily at the fuzzy blue figure standing in the door way
"Hank are you a sight for sore eyes!"
Hank chuckled that hearty, Santa like chuckle of his "Well the sleeping beauty wakes" he remarked striding over to her "and how are you feeling?"
Rogue followed all his little movements with an alarming intensity "rough" she snapped before meeting his gaze, shaking her head "I'm not myself Hank, I know there's something really wrong with me"
Hank reached out to take her hand, a way of comforting her but Rouge recoiled
"It's not you" she settled "it's me, I just don't need anyone else inside my head"
Hank took a seat beside her on the bed and looked and her lovingly
"It's just" she sighed "I've been hearing things for ages now, ever since I took the cure things have been...different. When it first happened I shrugged it off, then they came in my sleep, everything felt real, at night I relived everything that's happened, the pain of anyone I've ever come into contact with then I'd wake up and I could still hear them, it was like all the personalities of everyone I've ever touched were escaping" she looked at Hank whose expression conveyed his confused concern "I know none of this makes sense" she hopped of the bed , there was a breif awkward silence
"Storm's bringing the Professor back with her"
"I know" she looked at McCoy, his face riddled with confusion
"You're in here to McCoy" Hank noticed how like Logan she sounded "God, everything Hank, I'm losing myself to them, before you know I'll be talking like Magneto" she laughed nervously
"It's all going to work out Rogue, I promise"
"Have you seen Logan?
Hank got off the bed "Earlier yes but I haven't since." Hank looked at her and smiled "odd considering he's been in here every chance he's got"
"Really?"
"Yeah he's been worried sick about you, hangs around here so much I'm surprised that he hasn't moved in" Hank joked. Rogue felt a warm tingling sensation in the pit of her stomach like she had the first time she saw him, smiling to herself she could hardly believe that part of her still felt that way about him.
"The second she's all better I'm taking her away somewhere, we can back to what we were" he thought to himself, how nice it would be just him, Rogue and the open road he spun into the kitchen and straight into Logan
"Watch where you're goin' kid...Oh it's you"
Logan didn't like Bobby, he thought he was a bit of a wet blanket, completely without back-bone, maybe it was more to do with the fact that he was dating Rogue, his Marie, that bothered him. He was like an animal protecting his territory, he didn't want anyone else touching her, didn't want her getting hurt, and he knew what teenage boys were like, he saw the way the ice-cube looked at Kitty and something about him simply spelled trouble, for Rogue anyway.
"What's gone and got you in such a good mood" he grunted shifting away from the fridge
"Rogue"
"WHAT!" he pinned Bobby against the fridge by his shoulder
Bobby looked in shock "Rouge" he paused "Sh-sh-she's awake"
"What?" Logan let go of Bobby, arched his eye-brow
Bobby gulped "Yeah Hank says she woke up this afternoon..."
Before Bobby could finish what he was saying Logan had sped from the room and was heading straight for the lift "Why did no one tell me" he lunged out of the lift towards the med-lad "I didn't ask them to damn it!"
"Logan!" Rogue lept from the table and threw herself into his arms "God, I thought I'd never see you again"
Logan wrapped his arms around her and embraced her, never wanting to let go as he kissed the top of her head he spoke low and soft into her ear "I thought I'd lost you for real this time Marie"
Logan pulled back, loosening his grip on her slightly whilst Rogue arched her back to stare up at him with those big soulful, chocolate, doe eyes of hers
"I'd never give up on you that easy Logan" she said resting her head on his chest
Something in Logan stirred, something he'd never felt before he didn't want to let her go, ever, he noted how good she smelt and how right it felt holding her and how comfortable the embrace, this moment seemed how entirely perfect.
The Professor sat behind her with Emma Frost across from him. Storm didn't know how she felt about Emma, and she had convinced herself that her sentiments would be shared by the others at the school. Jean's tragic second death, "as if one wasn't enough" she often thought, and the Professor had just come out of hiding and suddenly he has a new protegé, with similar abilities and attitude to Jean, the only real difference being where Jean was a fiery red head with a personality to match Emma was a icy cool blond and frosty like her name suggests. Neither was she sure about how this new recruit was going to work into the X-men. Storm along with Hank and a reclusive, reluctant Logan had run the school for the last two years, training each student to fight so they would never have to but if the time came they would be ready, something about the Professor's return spelt change and with this Emma Frost, and in light of what had happened or was happening to Rogue, Storm knew that things were going to be drastically different.
"Charles" Emma spoke softly, still rather shy of the new life she'd taken on when she became part of Xaveir's
"Yes Emma"
"Why are you taking me to this tinstitue of yours?"
"Emma" The Professor spoke in his fatherly voice "Jean was a lot like you, incredible ability, potential, but angry, she possessed the ability to destroy the world or save it In the end none of us could reach her. You on the other hand have that same great ability and potential and I don't wish for history to repeat itself, my X-men are lost without their physic and I would be lost without someone to take over when I'm gone"
Storm cocked her head over her shoulder scowling at Emma "I'm taking over, you told me that, I've been running he school for two years Charles!"
Xavier threw her a look and she knew he was inside her head, she turned back to the wheel and focused on what she was doing
"We'll be there within the hour Professor
"Hey kid" the low, smooth, gruff accent, that still made her weak at the knees, drifted from the door. She cocked her head over her shoulder and smiled at Logan standing there in nothing but his scruff white wife beater and his tight denims on.
"Hey Logan" she placed her book on the coffee table and pulled her jacket about her shoulders
"It's late" he muttered and he waltzed into the room "shouldn't you be in bed" he whispered into her ear "in mine" he thought pressing his hands down into the arm of the sofa either side of her. Rogue closed her eyes and smiled feeling his warm breath against her cool neck, she lent her head back looking up at him
"I'm twenty, nearly twenty-one Logan, I can decide for myself where I should and shouldn't be" she looked at him a coy smile and a gleam in her chocolate eyes. He simply smiled and walked over sitting down at the end of the sofa, Rogue swung tuckend her legs behind her, leaning on the back of the sofa she was within inches of Logan in all his under dressed glory.
"Missed you in training today kid" he smiled reclining with his arm over the back of the sofa
"Really?" Rogue smiled and inched closer. Logan reached out and ran his fingers through her silky white streaks
"Yeah kid, cure or no cure you're the only one that can give me a real run for my money"
Rogue smiled as Logan dropped his hand from her face to her shoulder running it gently down her arm and coming to rest on her hip Rogue inched closer rolling her hip under his hand she moved her legs over his, if she moved again she'd be straddling across him. Logan brought his free hand up, running it gently along her chin feeling her creamy smooth skin against his rough hands, the anticipation was killing her, this was the moment she'd dreamnt of time after time since they met in Laughlin she closed her eyes and moved her head in against his.
Logans hand moved from her hip to the small of her back pulling her onto his lap, she straddled across him and Logan placed his other and around the back of her neck he could almost taste her, their lips almost touching, Rogues heart-beat began to soar as she ran her hand onto his shoulder and the other roamed across his chest, she looked into his and found herself lost as Logan pulled her in for a kiss. There lips met and Rogue's world exploded, she ground into him as she sucked at his lower lip, Logan's hands found the subtle curve of her hips and slipped his hand under her top rubbing his thumbs over her cool skin as he pulled her in closer Rogue placed her hands on either side of his face running one through his hair as their impromtu kiss grew ever more intense she felt Logan shift under her and turn as he started to lay her back on the sofa
"Rogue, Rogue?" Bobby's voice echoed down the corridor, she snapped out of the moment immediately and rolled of the sofa out from under Logan putting distance between her and Logan, who dropped forward on the couch before realizing she was gone. Rogue through a look at him somewhere between dissapointment and anxiety
"Rogue?" Bobby spun into the rec. room "There you are" he ran over and hugged her, she saw Logan's face over Bobby's shoulder as he straightened himself up and getting off the sofa left the room.
"You're back already? You weren't out for long?" she broke from his embrace in an attempt to go after Logan but Bobby simply held her hands making it impossible for her to leave
"I couldn't enjoy myself without you there"
She laughed nervously "Aw that's sweet" kissing him on the cheek she continued "I was actually just going to go up to bed" she started for the door in a faint hope of catching Logan
"Well I'll come with you"
Rogue stopped and looked at him lovingly, as she did she realized, she'd grown out of him, maybe it was having come so close to death or kissing Logan that made her realize it but she'd been through more than him and had matured because of it.
"Bobby look it's sweet and all how much you want to spend time with me but" she paused " I just want to be on my own for a bit ok?" she kissed him on the cheek and left the room, leaving Bobby to sit alone and wonder.
"What were you hoping would happen, you kiss her then what?"
Logan looked about the room. "I mean you're old enough to be the kids father"
"She's twenty" he paused "Jesus, almost twenty-one even and..." he sighed
"And you're, oh that right you can't remember, hell you could be older than the Professor for all you know!!"
Logan fell back into his bed and began to drift of to sleep, and tonight instead of nightmares he dreamnt of Marie.
Down the hall, Rogue was finding it harder to get to sleep. Tonight the voices were silent, all of them, except Logan's, all she could think about was that perfect kiss. "Bobby has the worst timing" she thought to her self as she clambered awkwardly into bed "I'm right down the hall Marie, why don't we see if that kiss couldn't lead to something more" she smiled at the thought, it wasn't like it was the first time she'd fantasized about her and Logan in that kind of situation. The reason she didn't leave her room and run into Logan's was the simple fact that she did she should but he was a teacher, and her closest friend, did she really want to endanger that for lust? and something told her that maybe he was acting on impulse instead of affection, she knew that better than anyone, regardless of his motivations she couldn't stop smiling, from the moment they met he'd taking a shine to her, she belonged to him, and although she wanted to be more than his charge, more the "the kid" she took great comfort in the knowledge that she would always belong to him in some way. So she snuggled down into bed and let the Logan in her head fill in the gaps of what could have happened in the rec. room.
PART ONE; The Voices In The Dark
It had been two solid years since the fiasco of Alcatraz. Collapsing on the bottom step to catch his breath Bobby went back to refelcting on what had happened all those months ago, with his head in his hands he hought about how Rouge had been in her own right to get the cure, her gift was crippling, she knew it, he knew it and so did everyone else at Xavier's Institute, no-one resented her for doing what she did. Nevertheless he had noticed her change, withdrawing into herself and becoming steadily more isolate and ferocious towards everyone, even him, especially him. She was restless, he'd wake up in the middle of the night and she'd be gone he'd find her hours later in theout in the gardens or wondering aimlessy around the halls of the Institute muutering incoherently to herself, shaking from the bitter cold, but hse was warm to the touch, It was worrying, distressing to see.
Alas this was simply the beginning of her downward spiral, the last couple of months had been the worst, her bad permanent bad temper elevated to violent ouytbursts, she got into numerous fights and had gotten herself suspended from the team by Storm - who in the absence of the Professor was the head of the institute. Furhtermore her mood swings where constant and unpredictable, her personality changed every five minutes, every five minutes it was like talking to an entirely different person. In the last few weeks she had reached her limit and bobby had born the brunt of it. She'd gotten into a rather heated and physical fight with Lorna Dane, one of the newer students, it took Storm and Hank to pull Rogue of the girl and before Bobby could ask her what had happened she had stormed off to her room and when he arived at her door she was firing all his belongins out into the hall screaming
"Leave me alone! Just go away! GO! get out! Now!" chucking his clothes at him, muttering to herself " You're inside my head, all of you, voices so many voices, it hurts," Booby tried to approach her as he reached out to touch he she recoiled screaming "OH MY GOD! MAKE IT STOP! make them stop!" pushing him violontly out of the way and out of the room "DON'T TOUCH ME! IT'LL KILL YOU! GO!...GET OUT!"
She was like a screaming banshee and weeping as she slammed the door in his face. He'd check on her in the morning to see if she was ok, but she was gone. He was frantic, after the events of the night before he had worreid that she had left, but as he ran around the institute, and passing by the bay window in the main hall he spotted a small figure huddled in black by the pool. He went outside and appraoched slowly but decided not to interact with her, he simply watched her as she looked into the clear still water she sat there stiff and lifeless but he left her there, reluctantly, he knew now that she didn't need him to help her, and she was best left to her own deivices, what she was going through he didin't understand but he felt like she needed her space.
Within the the last month she had distanced herslef from everyone, she spent alot of time in her room and if she wasn't in he room she awas outside somewhere in the gardens. The other students thought she was doing it simply for attention, now that she was "normal", she couldn't show off the way the others could the teachers and other x-men had wiped her completely of their radar, at least thats how it seemed for, Bobby knew it was more than that, he also knew that he was the only one that really took notice of her. It all came to a head when one moringin simply out of curiosity he passed by her room and hed gone into see if she was there, he wasn't suproise when he found the bed empty but he was alarmed when e noticed the sound of running water and the stream running from the bathroom out on to the carpet. She was submerged in the tub, not breathing, her chocolate brown eyes wide, like a deers when caught in head lights, He dragged her from the tub, screaming
"HELP! SOMEBODY HELP!"
Logan was first to appear on the scene, he'd become somewhat scarce these days dealing with the harsh reality that he'd killed Jean and taking no solace in the fact that there was nothing else that could be done for her. He'd been so scarce in fact that he hadn't even noticed what was happening to Rogue.
"Bobby! What the..." his eyes darted to the damp, lifeless body of Rogue laying in Bobby's arms "WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO!!" he rushed in throwing Bobby aside and dragging Rogue into his grasp
"It wasn't me I found her like this"
Logan threw him a venomous look as he lay her on the floor ready to start C.P.R "What do you mean" he breathed into her mouth placing his hands on her chest and pushing "found her?"
"She was in the tub, I don't I found her like this" Bobby stood up and loomed over him. Storm appeared at the door , followed by Hank and some of the younger more curious children
"Logan what the hell is going on!!" Storm bellowed from the door before realizing what he was doing "My God Logan what happened?" she stepped into the room and knelt down by his side. Logan pulled away from Rogue glancing over his shoulder at Hank and the swarm behind him, he looked over his shoulder at Storm
"Ask the Ice-cube" Logan stood up and let Hank take over
"Bobby?" Storm queried with a worried look on her face, Bobby shot over to the bed before collapsing beside it, weeping
"I found her like this" he sniffed "She's been slipping for weeks, months, ever since she got that damned cure" he glared at Storm "And you haven't even noticed! Storm you're meant to be head of the school, you're meant to be looking after the students but all you care about is getting the Professor back, Rogue has nothing else but this institute and the X-men, we're her only family and you've left her out to dry!" You've completely ignored what's happening" he pointed at Rouge still not breathing or living in anyway
"Watch it frosty!..." Logan bellowed from the hall shooing the kids on before slamming the door behind him
"Or what! You're meant to be her 'protector' isn't that what you said 'I'll take care of you' great fucking job Wolverine" he rasped his eyes puffing and red and his throat was raw already. Storm made to condemn him but looked only at Rogue and her fellow staff members, guilty expressions held by all, they realized that they had neglected the one person that really needed them.
Bobby stood up to leave when he heard the gasping and spluttering, he turned and saw Rogue convulsing coughing violently Hank supporting her as she tried to sit up. She made no noise no further motion but simply lay there in Hnak's arms breathing slowly. Hank carried her off to the med-lab Bobby watched her chest rise and fall holding her wrist the whole way, Logan in tow hands in pockets head hung low, walking with his tail between his legs so to speak. He felt more guilty than any of them, the "ice-cube" was right he had sworn to look after her and you'd think a guy would learn after the kid near died at Liberty Island then been dragged out of the Jet on the way to Alkali Lake. He was so absorbed in his own thing he'd forgotten all about her.
He stepped into the lift with the other two and Rogue, he dared one look at the barely-a-man-boy gushing over her and then at Rouge her once creamy shin was white, like death the veins all up on the surface
"God how long was she in that tub?! and what the hell was she even thinking?" he thought to himself
The lift doors opened and the three men and little lady walked the death march to the med-lad Hank laid her down on the bed, hooked her up to the machines then looked at Logan and Bobby with a gaze that told them to leave. Nothing was said between them as they went back up to the school, Bobby went back to the room and Logan went in search of Storm.
